Wildcats win battle of unbeatens in OT
MOUNDRIDGE, Kansas – Two of the 32 unbeaten high school football teams in the state of Kansas were found on the same football field Friday night, as class 1A powerhouses Moundridge and Sedgwick clashed on the gridiron before the Wildcats pulled off an electric 41-40 overtime win.Of the 32 unbeaten teams entering week seven of the football season, four of them were found in class 1A as Jackson Heights, Conway Springs, Sedgwick and Moundridge made up those four teams.By the end of Friday night, however, that number was whittled down to three after the Wildcats denied Sedgwick’s two-point try in overtime to send the packed Moundridge stadium into a frenzy.“The atmosphere was unbelievable.
Area roundup: County schools near fall conclusion
The 2024 fall sports season is quickly winding down as all six of the McPherson County area smaller schools head into their regionals for both volleyball and cross country, while winding down to the final few weeks of football for five of the six.Among the highlights for the area schools, both Iman and Little River volleyball programs will head into regionals ranked first as the Lady Teutons are first in Class 2A and Little River in first in Class 1A Division I.

Lady Pup tennis takes second at state for consecutive year
TOPEKA, Kansas – The conclusion of this past weekend’s class 4A state girls tennis tournament resulted in back-to-back runner-up finishes for McPherson High School, as all Lady Pup players earned at least two points to claim second place as a team.At last year’s state tournament, McPherson had also finished as runners-up after ending with nine fewer points than eventual state champion Independence.

Two weeks removed from securing a program-defining victory over Kansas Wesleyan, the McPherson College football team shook another monkey off its back on Saturday following the Bulldogs’ first win over Bethel since 2017 with a 35-10 victory.The last time McPherson College took the football field, they walked away with a 42-13 win over Kansas Wesleyan, which was the first time the Bulldogs defeated the Coyotes since 2014 and the first time head coach Jeremiah Fiscus had gotten the best of the Coyotes as a coach or player.The win vaulted McPherson into its fifth straight victory as they took a 5-1 record into the bye week.

Bullpups tie Salthawks in double OT matchup
A five-game losing streak to an annual rival was broken in an unusual way Thursday night, as the McPherson High School boys soccer team went toe-to-toe with 5A contender Hutchinson before the game ended in a 1-1 tie following two overtime periods.For the first time since 2018, a Hutchinson team failed to put a tick in the McPherson loss column after Thursday night’s windy matchup resulted in a 1-1 tie.

Lady Pups sweep senior night ahead of sub-state
In one last tune-up before postseason play, the McPherson High School volleyball team continued its late-season momentum by sweeping Winfield and Augusta on senior night last Thursday.A tough schedule to begin the season saw McPherson stumble out to a 2-6 record, but over their last 18 matches, the Lady Pups are 14-4 and vaulted their record to 22-15 on the season following 2-0 wins over both Winfield and Augusta on senior night.McPherson began the evening with a matchup against Winfield, a team that the Lady Pups had defeated 2-0 back on October 1.
Commission approves forensic tool
In a move to enhance its investigative capabilities, the McPherson Police Department asked McPherson City Commissioners for approval to purchase Cellebrite, a digital forensics tool, after facing limitations with the previous system.The decision comes as a response to the growing need to extract crucial information from cellphones and social media accounts in criminal investigations.McPherson Police Chief Mikel Golden informed Commissioners that drug dealers and other criminals often use text messages, emails, and social media to communicate with accomplices and intimidate victims.
