Family and friends greeted Marine Lance Cpl. Jimmy Mitchell with cheers, hellos and plenty of hugs Sunday during Mitchell’s official welcome-home party.
Mitchell, who returned from Iraq in October, was stationed in California until his return to McPherson Dec. 17.
The McPherson High School graduate will be home until Jan. 2, after which he will return back to California to continue his service in the Marines.
Mitchell was greeted by his family, friends and loved ones. Area members of the Legion Rider’s Patriot Guard were also present to greet Mitchell and thank him for his service to the country.
The riders also presented Mitchell with the traditional flag and challenge coin.
Mitchell said he was surpirsed by everyone’s attendance at Sunday’s event and was happy to see all of his friends and family.
Like most in the service, Mitchell’s time in McPherson is bittersweet.
The break gives him an opportunity to see family and catch-up with old friends but a trip home means another deployment is near and that means months without contact with family.
On Sunday, family members said they were happy to have Mitchell back, even if it was for only a short amount of time.
“Words don’t describe how good it feels to have him home,” Hannah Frisbie said.
