The Great Bend Class 5A volleyball sub-state is loaded.
For McPherson High to advance on to state, it will have to knock off two state-worthy opponents.
MHS, 26-13 on the year, opens with Salina South at 3 p.m. If the Bullpups can survive against the 23-14 Cougars, they would most likely play No. 1 seed Valley Center in the finals. The Hornets are 34-3 on the year.
In the other sub-state bracket, Newton would appear to have a clear path. The Railers (32-7) take on Salina Central (9-24), while Liberal (25-12) plays Hays (13-19). Those two winners meet for the right to advance to state.
CROSS COUNTRY TO NEWTON -- Also attempting to extend its season Saturday is the MHS cross country team, which will be going to Newton for the regional.
Other teams include Emporia, Great Bend, Hays, Salina Central, Salina South and Topeka West.
The girls will run at 2 p.m., with the boys at 2:45.
Three teams qualify. The Top 10 runners also qualify, with the possibility of additional qualifiers.
