The weekly roundup of sports news and views...
News -- McPherson High closes out the regular season Friday at Newton.
Views -- It should be a mere formality, but you know the Railers will be up for the Bullpups, who have owned the series since Tom Young arrived. MHS, though, should have no trouble and then be home the following Friday for the first round of the playoffs. We have a feeling this team could go a ways, as the Gardner-Edgerton game proved it could play with the best Kansas has to offer.
News -- McPherson High’s volleyball team begins state play Friday at Topeka.
Views -- The Bullpups are riding a high after knocking off third-ranked Valley Center to advance for the first time since 2005. It’s hard to believe this is the same team that was 14-10 at one point in the season, but MHS coach Christy Doile kept telling us all year her team would peak at the right time -- and it did. Now the Bullpups want to do more than just be there, they want to be a factor.
News -- The sixth-ranked McPherson College Bulldogs are getting closer and closer to winning their first KCAC football title in 58 years.
Views -- The Bulldogs are getting so close they can taste it. But they still need to approach these last three games like they’re the playoffs, because there’s a good chance they can host a national playoff game if they win out. Tabor, Saturday’s opponent, has only two wins, while Bethel is winless, and both games are here. Then it’s up to Lindsborg for the regular-season finale against Bethany and you can bet the Swedes will bring both barrels a blazing, as they would like nothing better than to make a national splash.
News -- The Kansas City Chiefs move to 4-2 with a 42-20 spanking of Jacksonville.
Views -- Sunday could be the make-or-break game, as the Chiefs are expected to win against Buffalo, and they haven’t had much experience in recent years in handling success. We really like how the Chiefs run the ball and for all the Matt Cassel bashing that’s gone on, he’s managing the game well and not making the big mistake like he did last year. The defense is starting to show a few cracks and it really needs a dominating performance. Buffalo, though, put up more than 500 yards last week against Baltimore, which supposedly has the NFL’s best defense.
News -- Just when it appeared Kansas State was on its way to eight or nine wins, it suffers a puzzling loss to Baylor.
Views -- It’s now been seven weeks and we don’t know much more about Kansas State than we did a month ago. The Wildcats are starting to look more like a 7-5 team, as their defense simply doesn’t seem to have enough speed to play with the fast teams. Oklahoma State certainly has a lot of playmakers, though its top receiver has been suspended this week. Playing at home should help the Wildcats, but they’re a decided underdog.
News -- The Kansas Jayhawks are routed for a third straight Big 12 game.
Views -- KU is looking for the nearest hole to crawl in. We hate to say it, but this could be one of very worst teams since the inception of the Big 12 and that includes some really bad Baylor teams that looked to be the 13th- worst team in the 12-team league.
