Darrel Channing Alumbaugh, 90, of Hutchinson, passed away on May 25, 2011 at Pleasant View Home in Inman. He was born Nov. 30, 1920, the son of Harvey Herbert Alumbaugh and Ritta Ann (Vetter ) Alumbaugh; he was the third born of seven children. Three of his sisters preceded him in death: Eula Belle Williams, V. Pauline (Sanders) Gisel, and R. Jean Stiles. Surviving siblings are Wanda Morris, McPherson, H. Herbert Alumbaugh Jr., Mendota, IL, and Patricia Falke, Hutchinson. The family was raised on a farm north of Hutchinson.
He enlisted in the Army in February 1944, and was in the 179th Infantry, 45th Division, in the European Theatre of Operations of World War II, touring in Africa, Italy, France, Germany, and Belgium. Darrel was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and honored with a Purple Heart.
He married Elnora Garnet Vanalstine on July 5, 1944, and they had five children. His wife Elnora preceded him in death on May 8, 1996, and he is survived by his five children: Ronald Wayne Alumbaugh of McPherson, Sandra Sue Johnson of Centennial, Colo., Michael Laverne Alumbaugh of Park City, Janet Lynn Daniels of Bella Vista, Ark., and Keith Edward Alumbaugh of Findlay, Ohio. Surviving grandchildren are Lisa (Alumbaugh) Klinkerman, Brent Alumbaugh, Ashley Johnson, Lauren Johnson, Kara (Alumbaugh) Dekker, Aaron Alumbaugh, Matthew Alumbaugh, Christina Alumbaugh, Timothy Alumbaugh, Jacob Daniels, Jaime Daniels, Justin Daniels, Anna Alumbaugh and Morgan Alumbaugh.  Surviving great-grandchildren are Emilie Johnson (Klinkerman), Ian Alumbaugh, Kati Alumbaugh, and Maddox Daniels.
Darrel worked in a variety of maintenance/repair positions for Sears Roebuck and Co. in Hutchinson and then retired in 1986 after working 16 years at Mid-America Nazarene University in Olathe.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Monday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory with Pastor Bones Nay presiding. Cremation will follow.  Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday with the family present to receive friends.
