The 2013 KCAC Cross Country Championships hosted by Southwestern College were held in Winfield over the weekend.
The Bulldog men's team finished third, while the Bethany men took sixth, with Jeremiah Gerardy qualifying for the NAIA National Championships later this month.
In the ladies race, the Lady Bulldogs claimed fourth place, with Aspen Frey qualifying for nationals, while Bethany took 10th.
Seven total Bulldog personal records were recorded at the meet including one by Aspen Frey who punched her ticket to the 2013 NAIA National Championships.
"I was very pleased with how both teams performed," Bulldog coach Cameron Magnall said. "We knew the women's race would be tight and it really came down to those few spots at the finish. The men did a great job of working together in a pack to secure third."
In what has become their method of operation, the men's team came out and ran a pack race, meaning that they hung with each other throughout the 8000 meters. It worked well for them on Saturday as they surprised everybody, including themselves, with a third place KCAC finish.
The pack was led by Kwan Leung (21st overall) and Brandon Sherier (22nd) who posted times of 27:33.34 and 27:40.93, respectively.
For the Swedes, Gerardy turned in what Swede coach Aaron Yoder called one of the best individual cross country finishes in Bethany College history, as he took fourth with a time of 25:54.16.
"Jeremiah had the best race of his career today," Yoder said. "As a coach, it was a special moment to see all the hard work and dedication pay off in his pursuit of goals."
The Lady 'Dogs posted one First Team All-KCAC runner and another that earned Honorable Mention in Aspen Frey and Grace Viuhkola.
Frey led the way for Mac, ending with a time of 19:17.94 in fourth place while Viuhkola (15th) came in next at 20:15.83.
For the Swedes, freshman Elizabeth Benoit had the top finish, taking 36th with a time of 21:39.16.
"The team came together and produced on the last meet of the season," Yoder said. "Kylee [Martinez] and Lizzie [Beniot] ran a very consistent racing when compared to the last competition. I was very impressed with their focus and drive to end the season on a high note."
All of the cross runners for McPherson aside from Frey are done for the fall season and will begin to gear up for indoor track and field which gets underway on Jan. 11.
Frey and Gerardy will both compete in the National Cross Country Championships, which are scheduled for Nov. 23 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence.
