Both McPherson College tennis teams and the Bethany College men were ranked in their respective NAIA Tennis Coaches’ preseason polls ahead of the start of the tennis season next month.
The Swede men were picked seventh after finishing 21-3 overall and perfect in the KCAC.
Bethany capped their season with an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championships, the first time they had made it that far. The Swedes defeated Marian University in the first round and upset No. 7 Westmont College in the second round.
They fell to Auburn University-Montgomery in the quarterfinals.
"The number seven ranking reflects as much about the current team as the hard work of the team the last few years in earning the respect of the rankers and the other teams in the nation,” Swede coach Vic Bateman said. “We appreciate the ranking but know we have to start over every year and have a lot of work ahead to hold the ranking or rise.”
Bethany opens its season Feb. 27 at the Collin County Invitational in Plano, Texas.
The McPherson women, meanwhile, were picked 24th in the women’s Top 25 poll after finishing 2014 at No. 25. The Bulldogs bring back five members of last year’s KCAC championship team, including 2014 NAIA All-American Brooke Vorhees.
The senior will be joined by her sister, Nikki Vorhees, Brittany Gourlay, Claire Crossman and Chandler Short.
The Bulldog men were ranked 26th and return All-Americans Rafael Bulnes and Joan-Marc Fajula Rodriguez.
The two qualified for the 2014 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships this past fall. Bulnes finished sixth individually and the pair took fourth in doubles.
"We are appreciative of the rankings that have been given to us by the raters," Mac coach Justin Stuckey said. "We know we have a lot of work ahead but we're very excited about what we can do this season on both teams."
The Bulldogs will have their first match Feb. 28 at NCAA DII Washburn University.
