The McPherson Housing Coalition’s 10th annual Brush Up Mac service project is coming up and the due date for both homeowner and volunteer applications is April 2. The Coalition requests that all applications be turned in at the McPherson Chamber of Commerce 306 N. Main St.
The Brush Up Mac event will kick off April 18 and will be an all-day, one-day event.
With the help of volunteers from all walks of life, the coalition will work to better, beautify and “brush up” homes in McPherson for people who need assistance in doing so.
Brush Up Mac is a volunteer service project of McPherson Housing Coalition that each year in April brings volunteers together to offer help and assistance to homeowners unable for various reasons, to work on their homes. The volunteers make minor repairs, haul off trash, clean out garages, do yard work and other work around the houses. Homeowners who are low income, elderly or handicapped are encouraged to fill out a homeowners application as there is no charge for the help the program provides. Over the past nine years, the coalition has had approximately 900 volunteers who have helped 126 families.
Through the Brush Up Mac program, McPherson resident Salina Maddox received help for repair to her home. Through the program, Maddox was able to get a grant from South Central Kansas Economic Development District to fix up her home.
Improvements to Maddox’s home included new plumbing, a new roof, electrical work, a new electronic garage door, new doors, a new air conditioner and an entirely new shower designed for her disability.
“They saved my life,” Maddox said. “You have no idea how amazing it feels to just take a proper shower.”
At 7 a.m. on April 18, volunteers will meet at the First United Methodist Church, 1200 E. Kansas Avenue, McPherson for breakfast and then designated teams will begin projects. Breakfast will be prepared and served by members of the McPherson Housing Coalition and all volunteers will receive a Brush Up Mac T-shirt. Each team will be assigned a “house captain” who has experience in directing volunteers.
Volunteers are still being accepted for the projects as well as homes in need of repair.
