The Bethany College Alumni Office and the Department of Art will host a presentation from alumnus Randall Griffey ’90 at 4 p.m. Friday in the Pearson Chapel and Mabee Welcome Center.
A native of Norton County, Randall (Randy) Griffey attended Bethany College from 1986 to 1990, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts (Painting). Following graduation from Bethany, he entered the Kress Foundation Department of Art History at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, from which he received his Master of Arts and Doctorate. He was a pre-doctoral fellow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution, from 1997 to 1998.
From 1999 to 2008 Griffey was assistant/associate curator of American art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. In 2008, he accepted the position of curator of American art at the Mead Art Museum, Amherst College. His writing on American art and visual culture of the early twentieth century has twice been recognized by the Association of Art Museum Curators with publication awards.
In 2013, Griffey became associate curator in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. At the Metropolitan, he has co-curated Thomas Hart Benton’s “America Today Mural Rediscovered” and spearheaded “Reimagining Modernism,” a new presentation of the museum’s collections of European and American art, sculpture, photography, and design from 1900 to 1950.
Griffey will be presented with the Bethany College Distinguished Graduate Award at the Spring Alumni Awards Luncheon the following day.
