Derreck Kayongo will speak April 8 at Mingenback Theater as part of the 2015 Harter Lecture in Business.
The lecture will begin at noon, with lunch served at 11:45 a.m. Reservations should be made by Tuesday. There is no charge to attend.
From Africa to Atlanta with nothing but a dream and tenacity, Kayonogo earned an education, became a naturalized U.S. citizen, and has served in leadership roles in some of the world’s most respected non-governmental organizations, including the American Friends Service Committee; Amnesty International; and CARE International, where he currently serves as a regional Senior Advocacy Coordinator. He is a columnist with the Huffington Post.
In 2009, Kayongo and his wife, Sarah, started the Global Soap Project of repurposing partially used soap from hotels into new soap for needy populations. The Global Soap Project produces 30,000 bars of soap per week with capacity to produce over a million bars annually, and has been able to donate over half a million bars of soap to over 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Swaziland, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Haiti.
Kayongo has been recognized as a 2011 CNN HERO; won the Maxx Entrepreneurship award; received the Refuge Services Award; was honored by Congressman John Lewis with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition; and has been featured in more that 20 news stories and TV programs. He is currently writing his autobiography.
