Canton-Galva will bring back some old hands who are itching to get to Great Bend for the Class 2-1A State Tournament in May.
“The eight returning players have been playing together several years and finished third in state during the summer,” Eagle coach Kelly Nelson said. “We play in a very tough league, but would hope to finish above .500 and make a run at a state berth.”
Nelson does have the talent to at the very least make other teams in their regional nervous. He has three Heart of America second team winners last season in seniors Nick Bray and Tanner Klingensmith and junior Ethan Loyd. Bray was honored for his work at first base, Klingensmith at catcher and Loyd in center field.
Senior Connor Farnham was named honorable mention as a utility player.
“We need to replace a solid senior starting pitcher [Jacob Dailey] and a senior closer [Jacob Struber],” Nelson said. “We need to find a third baseman and cut down on the errors and walks.”
The Eagles open their season April 7 at Inman.

Eagle thinclads strong in long jump
CANTON — Canton-Galva track and field coach Jeff Savage is pleased with how things are shaping up for his jumpers heading into the 2015 season.
“We will be good in the high jump for both boys and girls,” Savage said. “[We have] several kids with potential in the throwing events. We are short on speed and relay runners.”
Savage reports he has 20 athletes out this season, evenly split between the boys and girls.
Among the returnees for the boys are Trey Moddelmog, who will focus on the jumping events, and Travis Unruh, who will throw javelin. Lane Weins is tabbed to run the 1,600.
For the girls, key returners are Kaylee Littrell, who throws discus, and Adrianna Wesley, who will compete in the sprints and the javelin.
Newcomer Maddie Snow is expected to make an impact in the high jump, the 400-meter dash and the hurdle events.
