McPherson High School’s girls swim team wasted no time in making sure they would be swimming in the Class 5-1A state meet in May, as they qualified two relays and two individual swimmers in their season opening meet Saturday at Manhattan.
“I could not be more proud of the team,” first-year MHS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “We had several girls swim personal bests and ended up fifth out of nine teams.  We only had 14 girls swimming in this meet and we do not receive any diving points due to us not having a diving team, so fifth place is a huge accomplishment for us.”
Katie Wurm and Megan Cutting both qualified individually for state. Cutting hit her mark in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking second with a time of 1 minute, 18.44 seconds.
Wurm’s state qualifier came in the 100 freestyle, where she was fourth in a time of 1:00.64.
Both also were part of the two relays that made the state meet, along with Ellen Yowell and Kellsie Corrigan. The foursome was fourth in the 200 medley with a time of 2:09.04 and fourth in the 200 freesytle (1:55.06).
"We had a great first meet and it's really exciting to see both of our relays qualified already,” Wurm said. “Hopefully we will continue shaving off time and have them really polished by state.”
Newton won the team title with 511 points, far ahead of second-place Washburn Rural (340). Topeka Hayden (279), Manhattan (278) and McPherson (257) rounded out the top five.
The Pups next hit the pool Thursday at Topeka.
“The team looked really good and I cannot wait to see the improvements we make throughout the rest of the season,” Bradstreet said. “Now that the first meet is over, we know what we need to work on and can look forward to our next meet in Topeka.”
