Playing like Pups: McPherson soccer perseveres for third at state

WICHITA, Kansas – A team that was loaded with nine seniors finished its 2024 season in a game that is considered to be one of the toughest games to play in across all of sports, but the McPherson High School girls soccer team overcame the odds by taking third place at state in class 4A-1A by defeating Rose Hill 2-1 on Saturday, May 25.For an eighth straight season, McPherson qualified for state after defeating Buhler 2-0 in the regional championship and then advanced to the state semifinals by taking down Augusta 4-0 in the quarterfinals.Although a crack at the state championship game eluded the Lady Pups following a 3-1 loss to Cair Paravel in the semifinals, McPherson bounced back less than 24 hours later by overcoming a 1-0 deficit to take down the Rockets in a mentally and physically tough third-place game.“Perseverance is the word.
