Area roundup: County schools in thick of season

The 2024 spring season has sprung into full throttle in the first week of April for the six McPherson County area small schools as they had 29 events scheduled from Monday, April 1 to Saturday, April 6.Here is a list of the six area small schools and what we had information on:LITTLE RIVER > It was a very busy week for the Little River spring sports teams as the track team was at Hesston on Tuesday and at Lyons on Friday while both the baseball and softball teams had a pair of doubleheaders.For the Redskin track/field teams, they traveled to Hesston on Tuesday where the Redskin boys and Lady Redskins both ran second in the team standings.For the Lady Redskins, the earned six gold medals with Aubrey Olander taking a pair in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles while sister Havana Olander won both the long jump and triple jump.

Inman veterinary student receives scholarship

Astrid Carcamo-Tzic, Inman, is one of eight students in Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to have been chosen to receive the 2024 Zoetis Foundation/AAVMC Veterinary Student Scholarship.The scholarship program is sponsored by Zoetis, a global animal health company, in partnership with the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.To offset educational expenses related to attaining a veterinary education, from 2010 to 2021, Zoetis and its legacy companies awarded more than 4,400 scholarships totaling $10.3 million through this program.

Heavy hitters: Lady Pups sweep Salthawks with big bats

After suffering its first loss of the season, the McPherson High School girls softball team has combated that loss with three straight victories as a win over Buhler and a doubleheader sweep over Hutchinson has led to a 9-1 record for the Lady Pups.McPherson began its season 5-0 heading into a triangular with Manhattan and Great Bend on Monday, April 1.

End of an era: Lady Pups coach Strathman submits resignation

For the first time in 19 years, the McPherson High School girls basketball program will usher in a new era as the Lady Pups head basketball coach Chris Strathman submitted his resignation as coach following a 29-year run with the program.Exactly two weeks after leading McPherson to a third-place finish in the class 4A girls state basketball tournament, legendary head coach Strathman turned in his resignation on Saturday, March 23 as the coach of the Lady Pups.Including the 2024 season, Strathman has been a part of the McPherson girls’ program for 29 years dating back to 1996, where he served as an assistant coach under former Lady Pups head coach Scott Schaefer for 10 years.During his 10 years under Schaefer, Strathman experienced the state tournament in all 10 seasons while also coaching the McPherson JV squad to a 129-7 record from 1998 to 2005.

Jamboree kick-starts season for baseball, softball

The winter sports season officially came to a close two Saturday’s ago with the McPherson High School boys basketball team claiming a state title, but two more Bullpup squads are in search of the same achievement as baseball and softball kick-started their seasons with a jamboree on Saturday.McPherson Baseball:Fresh off back-to-back class 4A state titles in 2022 and 2023 after never winning one in program history, the McPherson High School baseball team attempts to reload and go for a three-peat in 2024 as they started their spring season off with victories over Ark City and Newton in jamboree on Saturday.McPherson comes into the 2024 season having lost eight seniors from last year’s state championship team, but key returnees such as Ian Razak, Owen Fetsch, Brock Richardson, Carter Allen and more have the Bullpups in position at another regional title run.To start the season, McPherson faced and defeated both Ark City and Newton in a pair of six-inning scrimmage games held at Grant Sports Complex, which started with an 8-5 win over the Bulldogs.Logan Beede got the start and the win on the mound for McPherson against Ark City as the Bullpups rode an eight-run fourth inning to victory before staving off a late rally by the Bulldogs.After Ark City scored the game’s first run off an RBI walk in the third inning, McPherson responded with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
