For Jews fleeing Ukraine, Passover takes on new meaning

Jews in war-torn Ukraine as well as those fleeing the country are getting ready to celebrate Passover on Friday. The holiday marks the exodus of enslaved Jews led by Moses from Egypt to Israel. The Passover story is playing out in real time in the lives of Ukrainian Jews as many leave their homes. Organizations such as Chabad, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Center and the Jewish Federations of North America are holding Seders in person and online in Ukraine, neighboring countries, Western Europe and Israel. They are also helping procure matzah, grape juice and other Passover foods to fill holiday tables during a time of acute food shortage. “Good morning! Happy morning!” Rabbi Avraham Wolff exclaimed, with a big smile, as he walked into the Chabad synagogue in Odesa on a recent morning. Russian missiles had just struck an oil refinery in the Ukrainian city, turning the sky charcoal gray. Hundreds were lining up outside his synagogue hoping to receive a kilo of matzah each for their Passover dinner tables. The unleavened flatbread, imperative at the ritual meal known as a Seder, is now hard to find in war-torn Ukraine amid the war and a crippling food shortage.

December 5, 1927-January 14, 2022 Berty Jane Hoover Skellenger, 94, formerly of McPherson , passed away in her sleep on Friday, January 14, 2022 at North Pointe Assisted Living in Mayodan, North Carolina. There will be no formal service and her cremains will be buried beside her Husband Leo, in Mcpherson Cemetery on April 14, 2022.

WILDCATS GAIN SPLIT WITH ELL-SALINE

BROOKVILLE – When a win in game one slipped away late, the Moundridge baseball team regrouped and scored a win in game two of their doubleheader on Friday at Ell-Saline. The Wildcats jumped out to an 8-3 lead by the end of the third inning in game one and held a 9-4 advantage entering the bottom of the fifth inning when Ell-Saline poured six runs across the plate and pounded out eight more in the sixth to take a huge 18-9 lead.

REDSKIN TRACK/FIELD TAKE 2ND & 4TH AT LYONS

LYONS – Strong finishes by several Little River boys and girls track/ field athletes propelled the Redskins to finishing fourth and second on Friday at the Lyons Invitational. Scoring 119 team points, the Lady Redskins placed second, trailing Invite Champion Larned by just 10 points and finishing 39 points ahead of third place Macksville.

VIKINGS SPLIT PAIR AT LYONS

LYONS – The Smoky Valley baseball team struggled in the first game and lost 5-0 before finding their bats in game two and earning a split of a doubleheader on Friday at Lyons, winning 8-7. The Vikings were scheduled for a makeup game on Monday against Nickerson before hosting Halstead on Thursday.

LADY VIKINGS DEVOUR LYONS TWICE

LYONS – In raising their season record to 5-3 overall and 5-1 in Central Kansas League action, the Smoky Valley softball team dismantled Lyons on the road Friday to the tune of 16-2, and 17-1 victories.
