Essential Holiday TV

After a year that was long and hectic for many, the arrival of the holiday season guarantees some cheer in a very specific form: the TV shows and specials that were made to bring more spirit into our homes. Some have aired for more than 40 years, while others present a modern take on Christmas cheer. Here are 10 specials, and very special episodes, that carry the common holiday theme of togetherness with loved ones – some in unconventional ways.

BALANCING ACT

Annie Clement has a lot of feelings about attending her family’s big traditional holiday gathering. h Last year was the first time the 43-year-old did not go home for Christmas. This year, she was excited when a COVID-19 vaccine finally became available for her 10-year-old daughter, Hazel Clement-Weber, allowing her to start thinking about a visit. h Clement was less thrilled to think about being in close quarters with relatives who don’t take the virus as seriously as she does. h “It all stresses me out,” said Clement, a community college teacher in Rochester, Minnesota. h With 28 million 5- to 11-year-olds now eligible to be vaccinated, many families will face similar issues. Experts say the key to handling them lies in a combination of understanding risks and benefits, accepting that everyone has different priorities and talking openly about what matters most.

This year, with the proper precautions, we might see more real-life gatherings, and plates full of most – if not all – of the trimmings. • The good news: More leftovers, perhaps, to go around.

Easy breezy

Caribbean vacations can be anything you want them to be. To some, that could mean together time spent lounging on a blissful tropical beach. To others, it could be a more active vacation with scuba diving lessons, rainforest excursions and visits to ancient ruins. h In a place as diverse as the Caribbean, there’s a perfect vacation for every taste and budget. Here are the tropical destinations that practically guarantee a great vacation for everyone in the family:
