Bullpups’ Gerstner honored as coach of the year

Three state title game appearances and back-toback state championship game wins have all been added to McPherson High School head baseball coach Heath Gerstner’s resume during his time with the Bullpups, and Gerstner was recently awarded for his unprecedented success with the honor of being named an ABCA National Coach of the Year.

Fireworks with a Fireman promotes safety while having fun

A popular McPherson event, Fireworks with a Fireman was held Thursday evening with a large crowd of children and their families gathering in the 200 block of East Euclid Street. The yearly event, held in conjunction with Hopp’s Sno Shack and Concerts for a Cause, raises awareness of fire safety through instruction in the use of fire detectors and fire extinguishers, as well as through training in the safe use of fireworks and a fire demonstration by the McPherson Fire Department.

GUY GERARD

Guy Rondell Gerard was born in Salina, Kansas to Helen Lorriane Gans and Donald Edward Gerard on February 3, 1955. His brother Mark preceded his birth by four years. Guy started his higher education at McPherson High School where he excelled in sports and academics. This along with his Eagle Scout badge contributed to securing a spot at the Coast Guard Academy in May 1973 in New London Connecticut. That summer was spent sailing on the Coast Guard flagship “The Bark Eagle” to Europe. His competitive nature drove him to compete for a highly sought after degree in oceanography. He graduated in May 1977, packed his bags, and set off for his first assignment in Ketchikan, Alaska. At this time, he got engaged to Laura C Basile whom he later married. A buoy ender, “The Laurel”, was his home for the next year where he got to revisit his past dream of becoming a Forest Ranger; hiking, fishing and communing with nature. During his year in Alaska, he applied for flight school staus and was accepted for a class date of January 2, 1979 at Pensacola, Florida Naval Air Station. He flew in the Coast Guard for the next 10 years on the C130 and Falcon Jet; first in Elizabeth City North Carolina and second in Mobile Alabama where he was chosen among many to head up the education and training for the new jet, “The Falcon”, acquired by the Coast Guard to assist the C130 fleet in search and rescue missions as well as drug enforcement. One of these search and rescue missions led to recommendation by Guy and his crew to start a swimmers in the water program to save more lives. The program was later implemented and called Rescue Swimmers and has been adapted for a movie starring Kevin Costner called The Guardian. Guy continued with the Coast Guard in the reserves, retiring with 20 years in. Commission meetings rescheduled

The McPherson County Commission will not meet this week due to the July 4th holiday. The commission will meet next on July 10 at 9 a.m. in the first-floor conference room of the County Building located at 122 W. Marlin St.

Jayhawks bring high ceiling into new season

With the start of the 2023-2024 college basketball season being several months away, I figured I might as well start some unnecessary and unwanted conversations on the outlook of the upcoming season by taking a look at the insane amount of potential that the Kansas Jayhawks bring into next season.

Humane Society at capacity: seeks help

The McPherson County Humane Society (MCHS) takes in cats and kittens from strays to those whose owners can no longer keep them. The organization does its best not to turn any away, so the shelter gets a little crowded at times. The shelter limit is 50-55 cats, and they are at capacity according to McPherson County Humane Society Director Erin Eskildsen.

Lady Pups golf preps for year two

The long-awaited arrival of a girls golf team for the McPherson High School was a rousing success in its inaugural season in 2022 following a trip to the class 4A state golf tournament in Emporia, but McPherson is gearing up for year two as the team held its second ever summer camp last week at Turkey Creek Golf Course.
