McPherson magic falls short in 4A state title games

SALINA, Kansas – The culmination of the 2022-23 Kansas high school basketball season saw both the boys and girls McPherson basketball teams playing on the sport’s biggest stage Saturday evening. Although a championship banner did not come from either game, the Bullpups and Lady Pups walked away as runnersup in the class 4A state basketball tournament. A thrilling semifinal round on Friday saw the Bullpups knock off reigning state champion Bishop Miege 60-54 in a battle of the titans, while the Lady Pups rolled to a 52-33 win over Andale after outscoring the Indians 17-1 in the third quarter.

County Commission adds food sale issue to ballot

Ian Smith, Three Rings Brewery approached the McPherson County Commission with a request to add an amendment to Resolution 32-99 to the general ballot in November. Resolution 32-99, Section 6-267, Sub-section C states: an establishment which is licensed to sell cereal malt beverage on the premises has to derive not less than 30% of its gross receipts from the sale of food for consumption on the licensed premises.

Train derails at CHS

A train derailed Sunday morning at CHS Refinery in McPherson, leaking denatured alcohol and causing a small grass fire. The McPherson Fire Department was dispatched to the 1200 block of South Main Street shortly before 9:45 a.m.

McPherson Senior Center welcomes all ages

The recent Chamber Connection took place at the McPherson Senior Center on March 9. Sally Scott, Director of the Senior Center, is originally from California and said she has moved to Kansas six times.

Freedom Chapel to hold women’s conference

Relationships Rewired is the theme of the women’s conference being held by Freedom Chapel on Saturday, March 25.The conference will be held at Freedom Chapel, located just south of McPherson at 1064 14th Ave. The conference begins at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.

McPherson Fire Department presentations

On March 7, at the City of McPherson Commission Meeting, McPherson Fire Department Fire Chief TJ Wyssmann presented the new recruit Fire Fighter Kadyn Schmidt and promotion of Seth Graham. At the Commission Meeting on March 14, there was another pinning ceremony for Matthew Kangas as Division Chief of Inspections/Maintenance (Fire Marshal).

Moundridge City Council Meeting

On March 13, Moundridge held their Regular City Council meeting. Mayor Kevin Schmidt, President Kent Winsky, and Council Members Ryan Durst, Kirk Stucky, and Wayne Fisher were present. Jeremy Moore attended the meeting remotely. City Administrator Murray McGee was also in attendance.
