A second opinion is warranted after ‘clean out’ for knee arthritis

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 71-year-old male, 6 feet 1 inch tall, weigh 240 pounds and have atrial fibrillation. It has not impacted my lifestyle. About 90 days ago I had meniscus surgery called a “clean out.” Afterward, my orthopedic surgeon said I should be much better, even though there was significant arthritis. The surgery has not provided me much relief. After examination yesterday, the doctor injected my knee with cortisone, explaining this was the last alternative before a knee replacement.

Dear Amy: My fiance and I recently became engaged. He is originally from another country, and his family still lives there. Because of COVID-19 restrictions and the visa process, most are unable to travel to the U.S. for a wedding, so we decided to host (and pay for) a small U.S. ceremony and have a big wedding in his home country (where costs are much lower).

Moderna, Pfizer vaccines are best for those with clot risk

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with the factor V Leiden mutation a few years ago, after having a deep vein thrombosis. Then I got COVID-19 in October 2020, but recovered with only mild symptoms. Since I have the factor V mutation, I have chosen not to get a vaccine for COVID. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with COVID again in December of last year. Now that I have completed quarantine once more, I am really not comfortable with getting the vaccine. Any suggestions? -- C.D.

This Saturday we celebrated Kansas Day, noting our state’s beginnings and contributions to this nation. We have much to be proud of — our fields are rich with wheat, corn and soybeans, and our pastures are filled with cattle. The state has ample food produced right here in our communities.
