WAMEGO, Kansas – Mother Nature did all she could to prevent a repeat champion from happening at the class 4A state cross country meet on Saturday, but even rain, mud and drenched clothing did not stop McPherson’s Caleb Muehler from defending his state title as the Bullpup boys took third and the girls finished seventh.As a sophomore in 2023, Muehler pulled down McPherson’s first individual state champion in cross country since Adam Porter accomplished the same feat by taking first in class 5A in 2009.

A night that is, in theory, supposed to be a relaxing celebration has turned into more of a heart attack the past two seasons for the McPherson High School boys soccer team, but the Bullpups climbed out of a late deficit to defeat Great Bend 4-2 on senior night Thursday evening.Senior night over the past two years has been anything but relaxing for McPherson.

ANDALE, Kansas – For a second time in as many seasons, the McPherson High School volleyball team is heading back to the class 4A state tournament after leaving Saturday’s sub-state championship match with a victory in a rematch of last year’s state semifinals.McPherson may be heading back to the class 4A state tournament, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for last year’s state runner-up team.

BUHLER, Kansas – Another chapter was added to one of the richest high school rivalries in the area Friday night on the gridiron as McPherson took on Buhler to close the regular season, but a late charge by the Bullpups was stalled by a fumble as they fell 28-21.McPherson held a three-game winning streak over Buhler heading into Friday night’s pre-Halloween matchup.

LINDSBORG, Kansas – Discipline, maturity and experience all reared its head Saturday afternoon when the McPherson College football team snagged its seventh straight win in a dominating 59-7 rout of Bethany.McPherson was riding high heading into Saturday’s matchup and were the owners of six straight victories, which was something the Bulldogs hadn’t achieved since 2010.

The six McPherson County Area small high schools will be well represented at the upcoming state cross country meets as 11 area runners and one team qualified at their regional runs.Canton/Galva (Faith McMannis/Jaycob Dieker), Elyria Christian (Laney Reiff/Joy Beck), Inman (Riley Roots/Tyler Martisko), Smoky Valley (Esther Clark/Hope Willems) and Moundridge (Haylee Jantz/Dan Kuder/Reid Graber) had individual qualifiers while the Moundridge boys will take the entire boys team.Laney Reiff of Elyria Christian won her Class 1A regional while Eshter Clark took second at her Class 3A regional.The Lady Teutons of Inman are still ranked number one in Class 2A heading into the state meet while Little River is the second seed of the Class 1A Division I as it looks to get it’s third straight state title.Here is a summary of all the six area schools and their events the past week:CANTON/GALVA EAGLES:FOOTBALL – The Eagles won their third game of the season against five losses on Friday as they scored an eight-point, 32-24 win on the road at Goessel.Playing without quarterback Jaxon Chrislip, Bransyn Speer filled in well, getting the Eagles on the board in the first half with a three-yard scoring run.Other Eagle scores came from an eight-yard run by Ethan Brozek, Camden found the end zone from six yards and Noah Collins tumbled in from three yards out for the game winning score.Dominating the ground game, the Eagles gained 268 yards in total offense with 191 coming from running the ball while making seven-of-nine fourth down opportunities.Speer ran for 55 yards on 16 carries, Noah Collins had 45 yards on 12 totes while Ty Herrera, Ethan Brozek and Camden Kruse each went over 20 yards with 29, 28 and 25, respectively.On defense, Goessel did gain 145 yards passing but the Canton/Galva defense held them to just 29 yards on the ground.
