Area roundup: County schools near fall conclusion

The 2024 fall sports season is quickly winding down as all six of the McPherson County area smaller schools head into their regionals for both volleyball and cross country, while winding down to the final few weeks of football for five of the six.Among the highlights for the area schools, both Iman and Little River volleyball programs will head into regionals ranked first as the Lady Teutons are first in Class 2A and Little River in first in Class 1A Division I.

Wildcats win battle of unbeatens in OT

MOUNDRIDGE, Kansas – Two of the 32 unbeaten high school football teams in the state of Kansas were found on the same football field Friday night, as class 1A powerhouses Moundridge and Sedgwick clashed on the gridiron before the Wildcats pulled off an electric 41-40 overtime win.Of the 32 unbeaten teams entering week seven of the football season, four of them were found in class 1A as Jackson Heights, Conway Springs, Sedgwick and Moundridge made up those four teams.By the end of Friday night, however, that number was whittled down to three after the Wildcats denied Sedgwick’s two-point try in overtime to send the packed Moundridge stadium into a frenzy.“The atmosphere was unbelievable.

Late rally falls short in loss to Wildcats

One of the state’s top players at the quarterback position paid McPherson a visit in its final home game of the regular season Friday night, and the hype was as advertised as a late Bullpup rally fell short in a 35-21 loss to Mulvane.Standing at 5’11” and weighing in as a 156-pound junior, Mulvane quarterback Manny Myers entered Friday’s game against McPherson as not only one of the top quarterbacks in class 4A but in the entire state.The hype around the junior phenom was warranted as he erupted for two passing touchdowns and an 83-yard rushing touchdown in the first half to give the Wildcats a 21-0 lead.

Volleyball takes second at home invite

The end of the regular season has drawn near for the McPherson High School volleyball team, but the Lady Pups have started to regain some of their magic that took them to the class 4A state championship match last season as they finished in second place at their annual home invitational this past Saturday.Two of McPherson’s past three outings have gotten away from the traditional triangular format and have instead been in tournament style.
