Ernest L. Kanitz, 93, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 2, 2022, at Cumbernauld Village.
Born March 9, 1929, in Winfield, he was the son of Ray and Carrie (Hodge) Kanitz. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1947. Following high school, Ernest joined the United States Army. He proudly served his country in Germany, receiving an honorable discharge.
Ernest was united in marriage to Norma D. George on March 16, 1951, at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. The couple lived in Franklin, Indiana and Ulm, Germany for a short time while Ernest served in the Army. They made their home in Winfield and Ernest made his career as an Engineer for the Kansas Department of Transportation for over 40 years. Norma preceded him in death on February 9, 2014.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield. He had a passion for golf and was a charter member of the Quail Ridge Golf Course. Ernest was also a member of the American Legion Post #10. He loved spending time with his family and attending family activities. He was always going, doing yard work, painting, playing tennis, and anything else to keep busy.
His family includes his son Stan Kanitz of Galva; his daughter Sharon Buscher and husband, Stan of Newton; his grandchildren, Dustan Kanitz and wife, Brooke; Jessica Koehn and husband, Shawn; and Shannon Paulk and husband, Chad; and his great grandchildren, Kreighton, Kaizer, Kash, and Kager Kanitz; Riley, Kemper, Madison, Lincoln, Steele, Crew, and Henley Koehn; and Eleanor and Brigham Paulk.
In addition to his parents and wife, Ernest was preceded in death by his siblings, Margaret, Roberta, Melba, Rayda, and Howard.
Private graveside funeral services will be held at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Friday, April 8, 2022, from 10:00 A.M. to Noon.
A memorial has been established in Ernest’s name for the Alzheimer’s Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
