A fall can have a big impact on a person’s way of life. This is especially true for seniors due to the increased risk of broken bones that comes along with aging.

A broken bone for a senior can set someone back for quite a while because they usually don’t heal as fast as a younger person.

There are some things that one can do to help prevent a fall.

One of the best ways to prevent a fall is to stay active and keep moving. It is important however that you check with your doctor to make sure physical activity is safe for you before you start. Exercise reduces the risk of falls by improving strength, coordination, balance and flexibility.

You should also wear sensible shoes if you are at risk of falling. Shoes with slick soles, high heels, or that are floppy like sandals can contribute to falls. Wear sturdy shoes with nonskid soles and low heels that fit correctly.

Do not walk in stocking feet or slippers.

You can also use a cane or other assistive device to walk around if you don’t feel confident that you can move without falling.

You can also prepare your house in a fashion that can help prevent falls. Keep your rooms free of clutter, especially on floors. These unnecessary obstacles can cause you to lose your balance while frequently moving around them. Make sure your house is well lit so that you can see any of these obstacles that may be present.

It is also important to make sure any stairs in the house are well lit and have banisters to hold on to.

You can also put grab bars in the bathroom to help prevent slipping.

In the unfortunate case that you do have falls, you should carry a wireless phone with you so that you can call for help if you need to.

You can also help prevent bone injuries that falls cause by making sure you get plenty of calcium and vitamin D. Exercise can also improve bone health.

If you feel you are at risk of falling and/or broken bones, you should talk to your doctor, as they can help you develop a plan to prevent such events.

Taking the little bit of extra time now to prevent falls can save you a lot of time in the future that can be lost by an injury.
