The McPherson Senior Center is a focal point for services and activities in the City of McPherson.

The McPherson Senior Center provides activities and services on a daily basis to help our seniors remain independent and living in their own homes. With the coordination of Aging Projects and our local Friendship meals program, congregate meals are provided as well as home-delivered meals for those who are confined to their homes. The congregate meal at the Center is a great way to get to know new people and make new friends. No one likes to eat alone, so come join us here at the center.

The McPherson Senior Center provides general public transportation in the city. We have two great drivers who are always ready to help our passengers in any way we can. You will notice our drivers in their bright yellow vests, so you can feel confident that they are there for your assistance and safety. Our vans have wheelchair lifts, enabling us to provide transportation services to those who are confined to a wheelchair or other assistive devices.

We provide transportation to many locations for many purposes. The center will pick up residents of nursing facilities and make sure they have services to and from medical appointments, as well as recreational and shopping trips. Our transportation services are available to all ages. Just call 620-241-1848 to schedule a ride. Hours for the TLC van are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The McPherson Senior Center plans monthly evening trips out of town for dining and entertainment.

To help maintain an active lifestyle, the center provides and exercise program three days a week. Our exercises are low impact and can be adapted to fit most activity levels. Not only is the exercise program a great way to keep your body and mind active, but it is also a great way to interact with others. A lot of new friendships have been developed over the last 32 years during our exercise classes.

A foot care nurse is available twice monthly to help our seniors maintain good foot health and to make sure there are no issues that need to be addressed by a physician. A blood pressure check is available to all on the first and third Thursday of each month from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

The McPherson County Health Department provides the convenience of flu shots in our center, as well as providing our seniors with educational programs on health issues.

Recreation is a big part of the services and opportunities offered at our center. We have three pool tables, and they are used each and every day. We participate in a pool league with nine other community senior centers. A group of men play bridge each week, and are always looking for new players.

Activities at the McPherson Senior Center include Mexican Train dominoes every Friday in the afternoon, Bunco the first Monday of each month, Pitch the second Monday of each month, and Phase Ten on Wednesday morning before lunch.

Educational and entertainment programs are offered, as well as quilting classes. AARP defensive driving classes are offered at the center twice a year.

The center publishes a newsletter with our schedule of events and the menu for Friendship Meals. We are happy to add those interested to our mailing list; just call to add your information.

Every Wednesday morning, we offer free coffee and a time to socialize with others. Any activity that is requested, we will try to provide.

The McPherson Senior Center is available for use by the public for activities such as birthday parties, anniversaries, reunions and meetings for a small fee. The center is currently being used monthly by the Gem and Mineral Club and Three Crosses Church. The center has been actively involved in the community by providing a location for assisting with the Community Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and the Christmas Angel Tree program.

Our center has a medical equipment loan program for items such as wheelchairs and walkers, and occasionally other items.

The McPherson Senior Center provides assistance for those who need help with Medicare decisions with a certified SHICK counselor on staff. Help while filling out forms or just looking over other paperwork is also available at the center.

The McPherson Senior Center and Friendship Meals will be collecting school supplies during the month of August to help some local teachers and students.

Upcoming events at the McPherson Senior Center are an ice cream social from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25, including a cookie sale; and an out-to-eat trip on Sept. 22. We will be having a class on “Cooking for One, you can make it in a cup” during October.

The McPherson Senior Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is greatly appreciative of the support from private donations and grants.

Please stop in at the center and join us for lunch and activities. We would enjoy meeting you.

Sondra Frank is the McPherson Senior Center director.
