The McPherson Housing Coalition (MHC) has been instrumental in addressing housing needs in McPherson County since its founding in 2008. Many residents struggled with serious housing challenges, like homelessness and difficulty finding stable housing. To address these problems, community leaders and housing advocates created an organization to close these gaps. MHC’s mission is to provide shelter and promote sustainable homeownership and long-term stability for individuals and families in need.
Over the years, MHC has achieved the mission the first sought out. They have provided emergency housing assistance to hundreds of residents, founded Oak Harbor Cottages; a transitional housing program, and developed affordable housing units. They also partner with local organizations to offer wrap-around services like childcare, medical and mental health support, legal services, and job training. MHC has expanded homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing initiatives, ensuring that individuals in need receive immediate support.
“Homelessness should be brief, one-time, and rare,” emphasized Chris Goodson, Executive Director of MHC. “Our goal is to provide long-term, stable housing solutions that truly make a difference in people’s lives.”
At first, MHC struggled to raise awareness about the housing needs in McPherson County. However, over time, the community has become more involved, thanks to increased support from local businesses, volunteers, and donors. Although awareness has improved, there is still work to be done. Many residents are still unaware of all the resources available to them. MHC continues to focus on education and outreach to close this gap.
“The generosity and dedication of our community have been the backbone of our success. Together, we can continue to create a brighter future for everyone in McPherson County,” Goodson stated.
Over the years, MHC has faced challenges such as financial constraints, competing with for-profit developers, and changing housing policies. They overcame these obstacles through grants, partnerships, and advocacy for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). MHC has evolved to implement long-term solutions like permanent supportive housing, affordable rental properties, homeownership education programs, and new affordable housing developments.
Some of the organization’s standout programs include the Homelessness Prevention Program which helps at-risk people remain housed, and Oak Harbor Cottages which provides emergency shelter for families and seniors and provides services and case management with a 75% success rate. Sutherland Estates Permanent Supportive Housing provides stable housing for those transitioning toward independence, and Brush Up MAC is a countywide program that assists seniors with home and yard maintenance. Volunteers assist with fundraising, event coordination, construction projects, and the annual Brush Up MAC event.
“Our volunteers play a vital role in everything we do, from fundraising and event coordination to construction projects,” Goodson emphasized. “Many of MHC’s programs would not have been possible without community backing.”
Memorable moments over the years include a young family who transitioned from homelessness to homeownership through MHC’s support and financial education programs.
“Stories like these highlight the long-term impact of our work. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the difference we can make in people’s lives,” said Goodson.
MHC has significantly improved McPherson County’s quality of life by reducing homelessness, increasing homeownership, and boosting economic stability. The coalition contributes approximately $3 million annually to the local economy. Upcoming projects include new affordable housing developments, the expansion of transitional housing, and a new affordable micro daycare center.
MHC leverages technology for efficient service and increased awareness through digital case management systems, online applications, and the Housing for Good podcast. They engage the community through public housing conferences, social media campaigns, and educational workshops. Inclusivity and accessibility are ensured through targeted outreach to underrepresented communities. By maintaining regular communication with state and federal leaders, MHC navigates housing policy changes.
MHC tailors programs for veterans, seniors, and low-income families to address unique housing needs, and beneficial partnerships with local service providers, businesses, and faith-based organizations expand resources and services. MHC tracks program impact through housing stability rates, employment outcomes, and participant feedback. Innovative solutions include tiny homes, supportive housing, and wrap-around services. Staying informed on housing trends through conferences, research studies, and policy discussions keeps MHC current. Outreach to homeless individuals and families connects them with resources through local organizations, businesses, and the Kansas statewide homeless coalition.
Community feedback has led to program refinements, such as expanding rental assistance and housing options. MHC’s plans include growing affordable housing options, enhancing support services, strengthening partnerships, establishing a sustainable funding base, and advocating for long-term policy changes to sustain affordable housing access.
“The McPherson Housing Coalition remains dedicated to creating a brighter future for all residents, ensuring everyone has a place to call home,” Goodson emphasized.
