Both Bulldogs were selected the the all-conference cross country team

McPherson College cross country head coach Cameron Magnall believes both his men’s and women’s team will defy expectations this season.

“I am excited for the prospects of both the men’s and women’s teams,” Magnall said. “Based on the group that we have in this fall and the amount of hard work that they’ve already been putting in, I have no doubt that both squads will improve on their preseason rankings.”

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) coaches picked the men to finish fourth, while the women are picked near the bottom at seventh. Both teams had one representative on the 10-member KCAC Preseason Cross Country Team, led by Michael Janzer for the men and Laura Gibson for the women.

Janzer is heading into his senior year fresh off a 12th place finish in the KCAC Championships last season. Janzer is one of six seniors on the men’s side, which is a big reason the Bulldogs could find success in a conference that is expected to be dominated by Saint Mary.

Gibson, a junior, was named to the KCAC All-Conference First Team a season ago, after taking sixth in the KCAC Championships.

Gibson is a native of Kinross, Scotland and is a physical education major.

“Michael and Laura had great seasons last year, qualifying for nationals, and I expect both of them to lead their teams again this year, and look to add another post season berth to their resume.”

Both the men and women open up their season on Sept. 2, and will compete in the Hutchinson Terry Masterson Twilight Classic in Hutchinson.
