McPherson County commissioners approved purchases to improve safety and visibility at the McPherson Airport.

McPherson County commissioners approved purchases to improve safety and visibility at the McPherson Airport.

Cynthia Peterson, airport manager, presented a funding plan for runway end identifier lights, or REILS, at Monday’s regular meeting.

Abbey Heidebrecht of the county administrative office, explained that the purchase of new lights at the ends of the runway is necessary at this time.

“They were needing to be replaced because they weren’t able to be seen at night,” Heidebrecht said. “In case of emergency, they wanted to be sure people could find our airport or get out of there safely.”

County commissioners approved the 10 percent matching cost of $1,492.60. Funds from the city, Kansas Department of Transportation and other contributors will furnish the entire cost.

Commissioners also voted to hire a new maintenance worker for the McPherson County Parks Department.
