YORK, Neb. — Emma Van Donselaar scored a team-high 14 points and Cami Richardson had a double-double as the McPherson College women's basketball team posted a 62-57 victory over York College Thursday night at the Freeman Center.

Richardson seemed to have the hot hand early, accounting for McPherson's first nine points on a trio of first-quarter 3-pointers. She also picked up two quick fouls in the frame, limiting her playing time the remainder of the half. Van Donselaar gave the Bulldogs (9-8, 4-5 KCAC) a 13-11 lead with a layup with just under two minutes to play in the quarter, but the Panthers (0-15, 0-9 KCAC) closed with a 5-0 run to lead 16-13 at the quarter break.

McPherson scored four straight points to open the second quarter, retaking the lead on a jumper by Danielle Holt with 8:19 to play. York responded with a 10-1 run over a span of three minutes to turn a one-point deficit into an eight-point lead. Greer Kleber capped the run with a 3-pointer at the 5:20 mark to put York up 26-18. The Bulldogs outscored the Panthers, 7-4, to close out the half, but York still held a 30-25 lead at the break.

McPherson quickly erased the halftime deficit as Richardson and Kendahl Kelly drained 3-pointers in the first 1:15 of the third quarter to take a 31-30 lead. York responded with an 11-4 run with the only Bulldog points coming at the free-throw line. On four separate occasions, McPherson hit just one of two free throws.

A Brooklyn Coe fast-break hoop with 1:02 left in the quarter ended a drought of nearly eight minutes without a field goal for the Bulldogs. Fouled on the play, Coe converted the free throw to cut the lead to three at 41-38. The teams traded baskets to make it 43-40, but Kristina Battle closed the quarter by forcing a turnover and converting a fast-break layup as time expired.

McPherson retook the lead early in the final quarter as Van Donselaar hit a runner in the lane, but York responded with a short jumper by Justine Manjarrez. Manjarrez followed a short time later with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 48-48 with 6:51 to play. The Bulldogs went a 6-0 run over the next 3:22 before Jacqueline Esquivel hit a jumper with 3:29 remaining to end the drought.

The teams traded baskets down the stretch with Manjarrez draining a 3-pointer with four seconds to play to set the final margin.

Van Donselaar finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting off the bench to lead McPherson. Richardson added 13 points with four 3-pointers and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She also had four assists. Coe chipped in with 12 points, including an 8-of-9 effort at the free throw line. Battle added nine points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Holt had five points and seven boards.

Manjarrez matched Van Donselaar with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting with four 3-pointers to lead York. Kleber added 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting with five rebounds and three assists, while Kendall Fike tallied 12 points, five rebounds and two steals. Jesse Poneoma did not score, but chipped in with five assists and four steals.

McPherson finished the game with a sizeable 48-34 advantage on the boards, and outscored York, 41-28, in the paint, but struggled mightily at the free throw line. The Bulldogs struggled at the free throw line, hovering around the 50 percent mark for much of the contest before finding their touch late. In the end, McPherson was 17-of-30 at the charity stripe, while York was just 2-of-4.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they host Ottawa University in another KCAC matchup. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. at the Sport Center in McPherson.
