AUGUSTA— McPherson’s pressure defense was too much for Augusta’s offense to handle, and Taylor Robertson and Mandi Cooks were too much for the Orioles’ defense.

The Bullpups’ girls basketball team was dominant a majority of Tuesday night’s road contest in Augusta. They forced two dozen turnovers, and Robertson and Cooks combined for 34 points in a big 62-41 league win.

McPherson didn’t take long to assert itself in the first quarter. The Bullpups’ length and athleticism slowed down the Orioles and forced miscue after miscue. Augusta had nine turnovers in the quarter, and the Pups took advantage. Robertson scored a basket after a defensive steal, then hit a 3-pointer a couple possessions later to give Mac an early 13-3 lead.

Mac really surged in the second quarter. Riley Hett and Andrea Sweat buried back-to-back 3-pointers to open up a 23-9 lead. Augusta’s Madison Livingston provided the Orioles’ only real spurt of the quarter as she scored on a pass from Raegen Davis, then hit a 3-pointer on the next possession. But Cooks swished two free throws to give Mac a 40-16 lead.

Though the lead was never at risk, the Orioles’ offense finally started getting the better of the Pups’ defense a little in the third quarter. Jayden Marlnee scored four straight Augusta baskets to get the Orioles as close as 43-24. Davis later scored off a steal, then Marlnee hit two free throws to pull Augusta within 15 at 43-28. Emma Yowell wiped away any thoughts of a rally with two 3-pointers late in the quarter as the Pups pushed the lead to 20 going into the final frame.

Robertson finished with a game-high 21 points. Cooks finished with 13 points on three field goals and 7-of-9 shooting at the line. Yowell hit three 3s in the game and scored 11 points. Hett finished with five, Sweat and Jordan Bruner finished with three points apiece while Maggie Leaf, Claire Yowell and Megan Eisenbarth added two apiece.

McPherson is now 8-1 and hosts Andale this Friday.
