MOUNDRIDGE — Next week, Moundridge newcomers, residents and businesses will have a chance to get to know each other.

Quincy's Bar and Grill, 128 S. Christian Ave., Moundridge, will host the Moundridge Newcomer's Meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 25. The event is sponsored by the Moundridge Chamber of Commerce.

The event is intended to connect residents with businesses and city services in Moundridge, in particular, people new to town. Though a new event for Moundridge, it's an old idea people in other cities have found helpful.

"It's been done successfully in other communities, where people have the opportunity to sit down and get answers to any questions they have," said Murray McGee, economic development director for Moundridge. "Representatives from services and businesses can come as well and tell people about themselves."

Basic questions — like when garbage and recycling is collected — can be answered at the meeting. Residents can also find out about day care options, recreational programs and other opportunities in the community.

"I heard someone comment once they were trying to find a particular item and couldn't find a business that sold it, but a couple people knew of a place in town to get it," McGee said. "When people know what our local businesses offer, they're able to shop locally. That helps keep money local, and people feel more tied into the community."

Anyone with questions about Moundridge are welcome to attend. City and school officials, as well as church leaders, will also be present to help people learn more about Moundridge. If the event is successful, it could become a tradition.

"It's all about helping people feel welcome and develop networks and ties here in Moundridge," McGee said. "We want to help people start growing roots in the community."
