HAYS — Four Bullpups placed at the Bob Kuhn Prairie Classic on Saturday, but it was Austin Eldredge’s first-place finish at 138 that stole the show.
Wrestling defending state champion Zach Eck of Andale, Eldredge squeezed out a 5-4 decision to take first place, and solidify himself as one of the premier wrestlers in the state. Eck won the state championship at 132 pounds last season and is ranked No. 1 at 138 — Eldredge is ranked No. 3.
Bailey Yarborough looked poised to compete for a championship at 182, before suffering an ankle injury that sidelined him the rest of the day. He finished 2-0 in matches he wrestled in for sixth place.
Rhett Edmonson (106) went 2-2 for fourth while Scott Radke (145) also took fourth by going 4-2. Alex Grennan also had a solid day at 220, going 2-2 but did not place.
The Bullpups finished in 11th place with 73 1/2 points. Campus won the tournament with 143 points.
McPherson High travels to Augusta on Thursday for an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail Division III dual with the Orioles. A win would improve the Bullpups to 4-0 in league play.
