WICHITA — Only the top two teams from last year’s state championship could oust the McPherson High School swim team Saturday at the Wichita North Invitational.
Wichita Heights swam away with the team title with 314 points. Defending state champions Maize took second with 289.50, and the Bullpups were third with 266.50 points. Fourth-place Newton was nearly 100 points back with 174 points. There were 18 teams in all.
Some new faces in the 200 yard medley relay produced a similar first place result. Rece Reiman, Jori VanGoethem, Zach LeBlanc and Silas Steinert finished with a time of 1:55.56, nearly eight seconds better than the second place finishers from Salina South.
The other 200 yard medley relay team of Will Powers, Eric Gaeddert, Carson Stone and Dawson VanGoethem took second place in a different division with a time of 1:44.91.
In individual races, Steinert took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.97. Powers was second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 57.92. Gaeddert was third in the 100 yard freestyle at 50.68.
The Bullpups are back in action on Saturday at Rose Hill.
