Monday night was full of recognition for McPherson Main Street. The organization held its annual meeting at the McPherson Museum. On the agenda was the recognition of the past, present and even future contributors to the betterment of McPherson's downtown.

"I'm always made aware of how much I appreciate all of you," McPherson Main Street Executive Director Ann Engel said.

2016 was a big year for McPherson Main Street. With the numerous events and projects they have hosted and contributed to, the board of directors has kept busy and worked hard to give, build and solve problems within the community.

"The best part of my job is the people," Engel said. "Helping solve problems is my favorite part."

McPherson Main Street is an non-profit organization that, through various projects and programs, works to promote and develop the downtown area of McPherson. This is a big and important job.

"The future of our town depends on a vibrant Main Street," said Kendra Hopp, McPherson Main Street's 2016 board president.

This year will prove to be a big year as well for the organization with the Plaza Project on McPherson Main Street's to-do list. The project is intended to revitalize the section of Main Street at the corner of Main and Euclid Streets.

Through fundraising efforts, they have acquired six tables and umbrellas that will be installed in the area. Two of the tables will be game tables with chess and checkers boards and two others will be handicap accessible.

In addition, Mutual Telephone Company will provide free WiFi to the area. Hopp's Sound and Electric is working to acquire an outdoor sound system for the area and will provide the installation once it's purchased.

"This is about a $500,000 project, but it will be worth it," board member Richard Martin said.

Steve Mulch, former owner/operator of Guys 'N' Gals, was honored at the event with the "Going the Extra Mile" award for 42 years of dedicated service to the organization.

"I only wish I had taken more pictures," Mulch said. "After 42 years, Main Street is completely different."

At the end of the event, outgoing and incoming board members were recognized. Outgoing members included Ann Koehn of Delish, Sandy Ide of Emprise Bank and Brenda Ebeling of Brooklyn & Co/Brooklyn Bridal.

Also among the recognized was the outgoing and incoming board president. Hopp said farewell and made way for the 2017 President Katie Anderson.

"I have some big shoes to fill," Anderson said.
