OTTAWA, Kan. – The Swede wrestlers had a big weekend at the Ottawa Duals, going 3-0 against KCAC opponents.
In the first matches of the day, the Bethany grapplers were able to overcome Saint Mary 24-22. The swedes started strong, picking up back to back wins in the lighter brackets. Sophomore, Taylor Holman received a win by forfeit and freshman, Trey Edwards, defeated Haidon Allen by decision.
The Spires picked up their first points of the match when Michael Ritchey picked up a major decision win over freshman, Conner Mares-Ballard. Saint Mary then took care of the 149 lb. weight class with Gabe Blough picking up the win by forfeit.
Saint Mary then took the next two matches with Patrick Boulanger winning by decision over junior, Brandon Lawson-Archuleta, and Riley Jaramillo defeating Bethany's Jordan Ward by decision.
The Swedes then took two of the last four matches to close out the dual win. First, freshman, Brad Smith pinned Justin Kearney before sophomore, Carlos Martinez, picked up a win for the Swedes via forfeit. However, sophomore, Joseph Stevewas unable to come up with a win over Dakota Carnes and Saint Mary took a win in the heavyweight division by forfeit.
Bethany again started strong in their 27-15 win over York College. Holman picked up another win from forfeit, before Edwards won his bout thanks to injury forfeit. Freshman, Caysen Smith and Mares-Ballard then rounded out the smaller weight classes, winning their matched by forfeit as well.
Lawson-Archuleta then came up big for the Swedes, picking up a major decision win over Adrian Ojeda. However, sophomore, Nicholas Desch was unable to overcome York's Austin Coy, losing by major decision. Noah Manly then defeats B. Smith by fall before Steve was able to turn it around and win by decision over Justus Bjelland.
In the Swedes' final matches of the day, the grapplers picked up a 23-18 win over the host school, Ottawa. Holman again began things strong for the Swedes, this time, trumping Trevor Compton by decision. C. Smith was then bested by Ryan Wahl before Edwards pinned Donantoni Forrester. Mares-Ballard suffered a major decision loss, while Lawson-Archuleta suffered a loss by decision.
Finally, Ward is able to overcome Micah Miller by decision, and B. Smith was able to best Bayley Porreca by major decision. Martinez was unable to beat Ryan Barclay, suffering a major decision loss. However, Steven picked up a final win by decision over Ben DeJarnett before Ottawa' Richar Schooler won the heavy weight division by forfeit.
The Swedes have a quick turnaround taking their team to the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals this Friday, January 12. The tournament is set to take place at 9 a.m. at the Fairgrounds in Kearney, Nebraska.
