LINDSBORG — The Smoky Valley High School honors their alumni in an instrumental way.

For the second year now, the SVHS pep band is inviting alumni and community musicians to join the band during the boys varsity basketball game at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 12 at the high school gym, located on 1 Viking Boulevard in Lindsborg.

Throughout the game, the band will play every opportunity they get to keep the excitement up for the crowd.

“We will play as much as possible. We will play at timeouts, between quarters, halftime and between games. No one likes to be bored, so we play a lot; it keeps us on our toes,” said Adam Keller, USD 400 band director.

Keller also noted that there is no need to sign up to play with the band, he said to show up with an instrument and say, ‘I’m with the band.’

Keller said he wanted a way to connect with past alumni and community members, which has resulted in an exciting event for the Lindsborg community, band members and alumni.

“I want the alumni to continue to feel a part of the thing they gave so much of their time and talents to. The legacy of the Smoky Valley Bands, and the amazing teachers that have been here, is rich and cherished. I want the alumni to know that the we are working to continue the growth of the program they helped build,” Keller said.

Keller noted that community is everything anywhere no matter where you live, but in Lindsborg, he said it is a big deal and wants to use their band program to function as an ambassador to the community.

“We want people of all ages to be welcomed into our band family and see a group of very talented and positive young people that are dedicated and focused on making music at a high level,” he said.

Keller said focusing on the alumni in particular is a great way for the students to hear quality music.

“Our current students get a lot out of hearing the alumni play. They see the pride the alumni have and see that playing a band instrument is something you can do forever,” he added.
