McPherson Hospital announces the addition of a physician to its hospitalist service. Dr. Petie Ann Schwerdtfeger officially began her service on Jan. 1.

Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the care of acutely ill patients who are admitted to hospitals. They work at the request of family physicians to care for their hospitalized patients. This allows the family physicians more time to see patients in their clinics, while their hospitalized patients receive round-the-clock care from the hospitalist team.

Schwerdtfeger graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1999 and completed her residency at the University of Oklahoma Family Practice Residency program in 2002.

She had extensive clinical experience in Oklahoma prior to moving to Kansas in 2014, where she has most recently served as the medical director for the Greenwood County Hospital and Eureka Clinic. She has also served as a hospitalist on a rotating basis at other hospitals in central Kansas.

“Physicians and patients alike have embraced our hospitalist service as an important component in the care of our patients,” said McPherson Hospital CEO Terri Gehring. “The addition of Dr. Schwerdtfeger to our hospitalist service of Dr. Michael Bloustine, nurse practitioner Jennifer Alexander and our telehospitalists provides a more consistent team of providers.”

Schwerdtfeger said, “I enjoy the team aspect of hospitalist care and look forward to caring for patients in the McPherson area and working with the physicians and other providers at McPherson Hospital.”
