As February is recognized as spay and neuter cats awareness month, the McPherson County Humane Society will host their second Spayghetti dinner fundraiser to assist in the costs to spay and neuter cats in the county and in their shelter.

The dinner will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 22 at the McPherson American Legion, located at 401 N. Main St. sponsored by Industrial Electric, Wendy's and the Accounting Office in Salina.

"We did a similar dinner in 2014 at the Legion. It was very successful and very well attended, so we decided to do it again, but we decided to do it in February because its national spay/neuter awareness month," said humane society board member Dinah Strange.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under. The dinner will consist of spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and dessert along with coffee, tea and water.

"The proceeds help us get cats spayed and neutered, which helps reduce the overall population in general. Therefore, it will hopefully reduce the numbers in our facility," she said.

Not only do proceeds help cats that already live in the shelter, but it also helps strays around the county.

"We don't just do shelter residents because in theory, if we fix strays, that keeps animals out of our facility too," Strange noted.

What many may not know about the feline species is an average adult female cat can become pregnant a few times a year and can give birth to five or six kittens at a time.

"You can see how that would add up and they can start reproducing at six months old — it gets out of hand really quickly if we don't get a handle on it. That's why it's very important that February is recognized as spay and neuter awareness month because it’s right before spring and right before animals start reproducing. It's just a good time to get them in and get them fixed," Strange explained.
