HILLSBORO — Inman High School’s two seniors, Baylie Jo Ediger and MaKayla Michael, were not going to let their season come to an end Thursday night in Hillsboro.
Ediger nailed four 3-pointers and Michael was the team’s workhorse as the fourth-seeded Teutons upset top-seed Marion, 47-41, in the semifinals of the Hillsboro sub-state. With the win, the Teutons will face Berean Academy for a sub-state championship and a berth at the state tournament.
“Baylie Jo and MaKayla are both really good players, and neither one of them wanted their season to end,” Inman head coach Bill Maurer said. “I thought everyone played all-around good team defense tonight.”
Ediger provided an early spark for the Teutons, draining three 3-pointers in the first quarter as Inman took a 13-6 lead into the second quarter. Marion would fight back, going on an 8-1 run to cut the Inman lead down to five.
The Teutons led 21-16 at halftime, but it didn’t take long for Marion to tie things up in the third quarter. The Warriors won the third quarter 13-6 and took a two-point lead over Inman heading into the fourth quarter.
Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Michael put the Teutons back on top by finishing an old fashioned 3-point play. The game remained a back-and-forth affair until a huge 3-pointer from Ediger with 1:57 left gave the Teutons a four-point lead.
Junior Macy DeWitt made four free throws down the stretch as the Teutons held on for the upset win.
The two seniors led the way for Inman, with Michael scoring a game-high 15 points and Ediger finishing with 14 points. DeWitt chipped in eight points as well.
Inman will need one more upset win to advance to state. Berean Academy (17-4) will give the Teutons all they can handle, but Maurer is more focused on what his team can control.
“We don’t focus on winning, we focus on effort,” Maurer said, “and that’s what it’s going to take. If we put forth the effort, we know we’ll be successful regardless of what the score is.”
Game time at Hillsboro High School is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday.
