The McPherson High School softball team is off to a rocky start as they start the season with losses to Hayes High School 7-6 and Andover High School 7-6 during their triangular series.

Game One — Hayes 7, McPherson 6

The game was tied 6-6 and Hayes was batting in the top of the seventh inning when a sudden error led to Hayes scoring one run and giving the Lady Pups their first lost.

McPherson had a good start earlier in the game when Hailie Giddings scored a run off a single in the first inning. But in the second, Hayes put up four runs to give them a comfortable lead.

Addie Fitzmorris, who was on the mound, lasted all seven innings and gave up nine hits as a starter. Taylor Bruce and Bailea Crist led the Lady Pups' seven-hit performance.

Game Two — Andover 7, McPherson 6

Against Andover, the Bullpups led the game with 11 hits, but came up short late in the game. Both teams were tied up five apiece. In the top of the ninth, Crist recorded a double on the first pitch and scored a run for the Bullpups. The game went into the tenth inning, coming down to who was the better pitcher. Andover's Sarah Conley may have allowed six runs and 11 hits, but she also recorded 16 strikeouts and only walking one player. Crist started for the Lady Pups and finished the night giving up eight hits and five runs. Fitzmorris took over as the closer but fell short late as she gave up two runs off two hits and struck out three.

"I was pleased with our play, we need to work on our ability to keep the lead in the late innings of play. We had some physical errors that cost us. I was really happy with our hitting, facing likely one of the fastest pitchers we will see this year in the Andover Game, we out hit Andover we outhit them. Bailea Crist had a great night hitting going 6-for-9 on the evening, Sheridan Scott and Taylor Bruce added 3 each and Addie Fitzmorris and Emily Smith each added 2. Defensively Halle Giddings had a fantastic game at first base and Bailea Crist covers so much ground at 2 and had a great catch behind first base," said head coach Danica Fitzmorris.

The Lady Pups will head over to face their rivals Buhler High School at 4:30 p.m. on April 2.
