BEAVERTON, Ore. — Lane Porter has landed the  job of any sports mad kid’s dreams.

The McPherson High School graduate designs uniforms for teams worldwide in Beaverton, Ore., at Nike’s World Headquarters and gives much credit to his hometown.

“I’ve had a lot of support from McPherson, but none greater than my family. I learned early that you have to walk through doors as they open, even if that means moving away from the ones you love,” he said.

Porter was born and raised in McPherson and said he will always call it home.

“While my wife and I live in Portland, we love coming home to McPherson. On our trips home, you will often find us at Craft Coffee, Noffy’s or my younger brother’s barbershop, Fox and Ash,” Porter said.

His career in high school led him to his current job as he participated in a “robust art program” that taught him many important techniques.

“When I got to college, I realized that not everyone had the same opportunity. These skills were critical in building greater understanding of creative thinking,” he said.

After graduating from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design in 2013, Porter began interviewing with National Football League and National Basketball League teams.

“I ended up landing a full-time position as a graphic designer for the Houston Rockets. This job was tremendously important. It created the foundation for a professional career in sports. A year later, I then accepted the creative lead position with Sporting Kansas City (Major League Soccer),” he said.

After a few seasons had passed working at Sporting Kansas City, Porter caught a huge break.

“I was contacted by a Nike recruiter. They had seen my design work online and wanted to know if I had ever considered a design career at Nike,” he said.

In February of 2016, Porter began designing soccer uniforms for some of the largest clubs and federations in the world.

“I have the unique opportunity to design products that transcend sports and truly become a part of  our culture. I have always been drawn to understand what makes people who they are. Nike has deepened my knowledge through travel. I have gone to France, Spain, England, Germany and Russia,” he said.
