The McPherson Senior Center opened in 1978 and is still going strong 40 years later.

Sondra Frank, executive director of the McPherson Senior Center, said the facility offers a multitude of services for its members.

“We have a good time,” Frank said.

The McPherson Senior Center serves lunch every weekday.

“Our kitchen cooks the lunch and delivers them to Lindsborg so they can have meals,” Frank said.

Before or after eating, members find time to play games including Phase 10, bridge, Mexican train dominoes and more.

“They play pool all day, every day,” Frank said.

On Monday morning, Frank stood in front of a group and moved to the beat of background music for the aerobics class she has taught there for the past 34 years.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Frank explained. “We start out with stretches, then we use some hand weights.”

The aerobics class combines the use of exercise equipment like resistance bands and movements like country line dance to get arms and legs pumping.

Brenda Becker said she started attending senior center activities after retiring last year.

“Every fourth Monday, if it’s not a holiday or whatever, after exercise, we go out for breakfast,” Becker said. “It’s kind of a nice little social time.”

The McPherson Senior Center also offers other classes — Frank teaches quilting twice a month — and informational sessions about Medicare. Again, Frank takes the lead in those sessions.

“I’m the bookkeeper, I’m the secretary, I’m the director and I’m the bottle-washer, some days,” Frank said with a smile.

Not only does the McPherson Senior Center provide services in-house — it also assists seniors get around town.

“We provide the general public transportation within the city of McPherson,” Frank said. “We have the TLC buses that go and pick people up and take them to work, Walmart, Dillons, the doctor’s, to visit — just whatever they want to do.”

The McPherson Senior Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The facility is located at 112 E. Euclid, and can be reached for more information at 620-241-1848.
