MOUNDRIDGE — For most of the first quarter it appeared Goessel had a legitimate chance of pulling off an upset at Moundridge.

The Bluebirds led 12-6 with just under three minutes left in the first quarter only to see Moundridge finish the quarter on a 7-2 run. Still, Goessel went into the second quarter leading by one after outplaying the Wildcats for most of the first quarter.

From the very beginning of the second quarter, Moundridge showed that Friday night was not even going to be close.

The Wildcats outscored Goessel 24-5 in the second quarter to take a commanding 37-19 lead into halftime which they rode to a 73-41 win. Senior Dillon Vogts stepped up his game in the second quarter and led all scorers with 26 points.

“Dillon didn’t have a spectacular game, and then all of a sudden he ended up with 26,” Moundridge head coach Vance Unrau said. “We were looking to get other people involved. The bench came in and played really solid minutes.”

Up next for the Wildcats is a showdown with Sterling. While Sterling is having a down season by its standards, Unrau knows the traditionally-tough Blackbears will pose a challenge.

“Every night, in and out of this league, you’re going to have to bring it,” Unrau said. “Sterling will be one of those teams where we have to play error free and take advantages of mismatches.”

The boys play Sterling on Tuesday, while the girls are in action on Saturday in the Wildcat Classic in Haven.
