SALINA — Four Smoky Valley High School wrestlers competed in day one of the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament in Salina.

At 170, Dax Hopp made the semifinals before falling to top-ranked Storm Slupianek of Marysville by a 3-0 decision. Hopp can still claim third place and do no worse than sixth place.

Ethan Wampler was defeated in the quarterfinals by Andale’s Ethan Shackelford, 3-1, at 285. Wampler will have a busy day two if he hopes to medal.

Chase Pywell was defeated in the first round but is still alive after defeating LaJames White of Kansas City Piper in the backdraw. Pywell has a matchup with Concordia’s Hunter Schroeder on Saturday.

Also in action for Smoky Valley was Jon Burks at 220. The senior went 0-2 and will not wrestle on Saturday.

Action begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
