Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Noffy's Sandwich Shop & Pub would provide wine and beer for Story Time for Grown-ups. Twice Told Tales is providing alcoholic beverages for the event.
A McPherson bookstore is putting its own twist on the concept of story time with a new event intended to draw in adults.
Story Time for Grown-ups will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. March 30 at Twice Told Tales, located at 104 S. Main in McPherson.
Libby Monaghan, owner of Twice Told Tales, said she intends to hold the event four times per year in an effort to provide adults with an option for both an activity during the evening hours and connection between individuals.
"I don't do great with story time for kids, myself," Monaghan laughed.
Finding something to do after work is not always easy for people living in McPherson, Monaghan said, as many options may have limiting factors such as costing money, requiring a membership or necessitating extra time in the car.
"Basically, the idea is to give grown ups a place to go and hang out that's not necessarily a bar and so you don't have to leave town to do something cool," Monaghan said. "It's kind of hard to find wholesome things to do in town, so I just want to make a space for that."
Rather than being read to from a book in the manner of a traditional children's story time, Story Time for Grown-ups attendees will listen to a different guest speaker at each event.
"The idea is that people will come and tell their stories," Monaghan said.
The speakers scheduled for the inaugural Story Time for Grown-ups will be Evan Hiebert and John Verssue, who are promoting podcasting with their new nonprofit organization, No Stone New Media.
"No Stone New Media is a nonprofit focused on providing youth with access to the resources necessary to learn technical skills, storytelling and journalism techniques to record, produce and publish podcasts," Verssue explained.
Noffy's Sandwich Shop & Pub will be providing snacks; wine and beer will also be served at Story Time for Grown-ups.
Story Time for Grown-ups is a free event, but those interested in attending are asked to RSVP on Twice Told Tales' Facebook page in order to ensure enough refreshments will be available for all.
