The weather is getting nicer by the day and all the plants are starting to sprout and grow. All this new growth and nice temperatures outside makes it the perfect opportunity to start a new routine to make yourself healthier. Below are some tips to help get you started on the right track that hopefully you can carry on throughout the year.
Get Outside and Get Moving- Take the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather and get active. Get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity each week. Add strength training activities at least twice per week.
Get Enough Sleep- Days are getting longer and it may be hard to adjust your sleep patterns to the differing hours of light. Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep, Kids need 9-12, and Teens need 8-10.
Drink More Water- As the weather warms it becomes more important than ever to drink plenty of water. Substituting sugary drinks for water is a great way to get more water but also to reduce your calorie intake and decrease your risk for some chronic conditions such as diabetes. Drink at least 2 liters of water each day and more if you work outside or sweat a lot.
Eat More Produce- More varieties of fruits and vegetables will be coming available as the weather warms. Get creative and find ways to implement them into your diet. This can set the tone for healthy eating the rest of the year as well. Try to eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and 4 servings of fruit per day.
Protect Your Skin- There will be a lot more sun and if you want to enjoy the outdoors it is important to protect against the sun’s rays. Make sure you wear broad- spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and wear protective clothing when you will be in the sun.
Don’t Skip Spring Cleaning- Cleaning your house can help rid it of germs but it also does wonders for your mental health. It feels good to have a clean fresh house and having less clutter and junk can do a lot for your mental clarity and focus.
These small and seemingly simple steps can have a great impact on your health and wellness. The spring’s beautiful weather and scenery makes it an easy time to start healthy habits. There is no better time than now to get started, so seize the spring and get yourself on the right track to wellness.
