KANSAS CITY — Both Smoky Valley High School doubles teams are still alive at the Class 3-2-1A State Tennis Tournament and will bring home state medals.
Matt and Jake Lucas are through to the semifinals where they will face Wichita Collegiate’s Max Wheeler and Luke Swan.
Lucas and Lucas benefited from a No. 1 seed falling in the quarterfinals, which allowed the duo to pick up a 6-1, 6-1 win in the quarterfinals. The Smoky Valley tandem won their first match of the day by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Smoky Valley’s Cole Brumbaugh and Johann Rachholz had a busy day one of state and can still take up to fifth place.
After winning their first match, Brumbaugh and Rachholz ran into Wheeler and Swan in the quarterfinals and were sent backside.
From there they won two straight elimination matches to set up a match against Conway Spring’s Peyton Winter and Joshua Koester. Both teams will medal, and the loser of this match can do no better than ninth and no worse than 12th place at state.
Day two of state is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at Prairie Village-Harmon Park Tennis Complex in Kansas City.
