Cody E. Cumberland, 23, of Salina, may face multiple charges after getting into an altercation with Salina police while allegedly under the influence of alcohol at about 7:47 p.m. Thursday at the Casey’s General Store, 215 W. Crawford, according to Salina Police Capt. Gary Hanus.

Hanus said officers were dispatched to the area of South Santa Fe Avenue and Crawford Street in response to a report of someone almost throwing a bottle of alcohol at someone.

Upon arriving in the area, officers noticed Cumberland, who matched the description of the suspect, outside Casey’s holding an alcohol bottle. Hanus said officers noticed Cumberland was under the influence but since no crime had been committed up to that point, they attempted to give him a ride home.

Cumberland refused, started approaching officers and eventually lunged at an officer, damaging an ammunition pouch on his safety belt.

While being taken into custody, Hanus said Cumberland began to make threatening statements. As Cumberland got into the police vehicle, Hanus said he became irate, forcing officers to take him out and place him into a body guard restraint, during which time he kicked an officer.

Cumberland faces recommended charges of criminal threat, battery of a law enforcement officer, damage to property and interference with a law enforcement officer.
