LINDSBORG — The Smoky Valley High School volleyball team is determined to be a tough out for any team this season.

The Vikings went 15-23 last season and lost to Lyons in three sets in the first round of sub-state. With seven returning letterwinners and two returning All-Central Kansas League performers, Smoky Valley has high aspirations for this season.

“Our team made significant progress last year and we look forward to continuing our success,” head coach Sharlene Ramsey said. “We will have several players with varsity experience who should handle the pressure well and rise to the challenge.”

Bri Franklin and Abby Rose both had big seasons last season as underclassmen for the Vikings. As a freshman, Rose was named honorable mention all-league at middle hitter, while Franklin was named to the second team all-league as a sophomore at middle hitter.

Additionally, McKinley Johnson, Addie Heitschmidt, Belle Peters, Elyse Ramsey, and Kerington Haxton all saw significant varsity playing time last season.

Ramsey says there are younger players who are ready to step up and add depth to an experienced Vikings team.

“Our girls are eager and hungry to make our program a success,” Ramsey said.

Smoky Valley opens the season on Aug. 31 in the CKL Preseason League Tournament hosted by Hesston.
