Kindred Hospice of McPherson recently honored Veteran patient, Cpl. (T-5) James Bezemek by presenting him with a quilt made by a McPherson area quilting group, Gently Aged Ladies (GALs) of War & Peace Quilters.
Cpl. Bezemek entered the US Army on August 18, 1943, serving in the 42nd Infantry and was assigned to Field Artillery, 79th Div. The last survivor of his battalion, Cpl. Bezemek, waded ashore at Utah Beach on June 8, 1944, during World War II, subsequently fighting through Belgium, Luxembourg and into Germany. It was there he helped to liberate the concentration camp at Buchenwald.
Though haunted by that experience to this day, Cpl. Bezemek noted, “There is no sense in holding it in. The world should hear our stories.”
