Today's installment of Throwback Thursday takes us to the 400 block of East Avenue A, on the south side.

In 1887, G. C. Millar was president of the Hutchinson Water, Light & Telephone Co. at Sherman and Washington streets. He decided to build an elaborate new home at 405 E. Avenue A. In 1897, Jacob R. Baker, president of the Rock Milling and Elevator Co., purchased the home and lived there until 1949. After that, the home was owned by a variety of people and divided up into numerous apartments.

The home was eventually razed about 1970. In 1978, a garden-style apartment complex was built on the three parcel properties. The apartment complex today is now known as the Heritage Apartments, addressed as 401-403 E. Avenue A. The complex is owned by Heritage Apartments of Hutchinson LLC, based at 415 E. Crawford in Salina.
